Family Portraits with a High School Friend - Liz & Family

When I received the call from Liz for her family portraits I was quite honestly surprised. Liz lives across the country now and I hadn't heard from her in around 20 years! Let's just say I was amazed and proud to hear from her and believe it or not I actually recognized her voice. She's just got one of those charming and sparkling personalities that everyone likes. Things haven't changed since high school and she looks just as wonderful as she did back then! Despite living across country, Liz still visits wonderful sunny San Diego with her family and wanted to get some new portraits. She did a google and found out that I photograph people around Chula Vista and other parts of San Diego. She put in the call to me and all the fun started from there. We spent some time on the phone discussing what options there were, locations, outfits, fun ideas and all the other good stuff that goes into one of my mini adventures. So we ended up photographing in Chula Vista on the ocean front so we could feature the beautiful park and the wonderful coastline with a sunset. I had an amazing time getting to know Liz again and all her family. It really made my day to spend sooo much time bonding and playing with her two daughters and her son. I really didn't want to give up playing with them but sometimes you gotta call it quits so everyone can go home and eat dinner! Well you can see some of the magic of the day here showing from the beauty of her family in our photos together. I would really love to thank Liz and her husband for taking the time to work with us and making it such an enjoyable afternoon and also for my dear friend Serena for being part of the fun and helping us out with all the kids and the project. Ieshia & Brien Burley's Wedding

I really truly have had the pleasure getting to know Ieshia and Brien Burley very well. I can say it was an honor to photograph their wedding in Torrance at South End and their bridal session in Palos Verdes. Its been a great time getting to know each other since our first meetings and our engagement shoot in Redondo Beach. Brien and I took it a little further and had a great time at the Torrance Elephant Bar a little bit before the wedding date. We discussed details, shared some drinks, food, and great laughs. One of the first things you cannot miss about Ieshia is that she really is a pretty girl. On top of that she has such a tender heart and one of the prettiest and most vibrant smiles. I know they make a wonderful couple. They are a Gung Ho fun couple who knows how to enjoy their life together. I wish them a lifetime of happiness and success. I was quite surprised and pleased when Alba first met me to inquire about getting some glamorous photos with style. She wanted to help remember an important time in her life and to share them with her friends and family. That's why she came to us over everyone else because we are well known to deliver those high quality stylistic, dramatic and classically gorgeous photographs with great prices too! During our meeting we shared some coffee, tea, good laughs and figured out our options and locations. It was an instant hit. On the day of our session Alba brought her sister Analicia with her to help out. That was awesome. She really increased the fun factor and we all contributed ideas that helped make the magic of the photographs. We had an fabulous time working with the last magic hour of light which is really the best time of day to photograph. There is no substitute for the early morning and late afternoon light. Maricela & Frank's Wedding Photos at the Los Verdes Golf Course in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA

I am proud to say that I had the privilege and pleasure to photograph Maricela & Frank's wedding on the Los Verdes Golf Course on March 25, 2011. It was day of skies filled with clouds that yield those awesomely dramatic photographs.The ceremony was beautiful. Immediately following the ceremony, their bridal photographs led us out on a golf cart adventure racing to the horizon over bumps, hills and sharp turns where we wondered if we would tip over! It was a challenge for all three of us. We made it to "The 19th Hole" at the absolute very last moment of light available. To further add to the memory and challenge of this little adventure, the coastal winds were blowing to the point of creating icicles upon our noses. Yet despite the quickly departing light and the freezing winds that could lock up all your fingers, we were all troopers and captured those once in a lifetime awe-inspiring images!! It really was a pleasure to work with both Maricela and Frank. They are both wonderful people. Please enjoy my favorite images from their Bridal Photographs on the "19th Hole." I write this with a heavy heart. My closest aunt passed away this Saturday. I have some solace in knowing she is now with Christ in heaven. Our family should be celebrating the resurrection of our Savior, but with so much grief looming over us, we are finding that extremely difficult. My aunt was a very amazing woman and helped raise me. After my mom passed away in 1995 she helped take on the burden of raising a young tee...n. She had no children of her own and no spouse. Her only family nearby was her sister Carol and myself. She meant the world to us. Her sister Carol is devastated and besides herself with grief. I am doing what I can to help her through this very trying time.Sadly Helen was on SSI and left no benefits behind for any type of services. As her beneficiary I am left with the difficult task of finding a way to provide her with a respectable memorial service.

None of my family has the money to provide her with a proper service and cremation but we really want to have a service of some sort to honor her life. We don't need anything lavish. Just enough to show our love and respect for her with our family and friends. I hope there is someone somewhere willing to help us. We are asking for donations, no matter how small, for her services.

Any help you have is more than welcome and I am quite grateful for. I know God will provide for my family in this time of need. If nothing else, please pray for us and her safe passage into Heaven to join our Creator.

Recently I had the privilege of working with Debbie and her two beautiful daughter Cara & Kaylene. I met Debbie while providing a consultation to another customer of mine. We hit it right off. I would like to add that it really took off during the shoot as well. It was a fantastic pleasure to photograph Debbie and her daughters. We all had such a great time I was really wondering if I was working. I mean of course the photos were awesome but we were laughing and having such a good time it just so grand for everyone! Fotos, Fishing and Fun in Big Bear

This week I had a brief escape to Big Bear California with one of my best friends. It was a fantastic time and it was really gorgeous. I needed the break I had one morning to take photographs on Thursday. I thought the light was questionable for landscape work but I went for some atypical photographs and thought in Black & White as well as color. So I guess I came up with a quick plan and it worked out really well! It was quick trip for photographs, fishing, food and fun at Big Bear. If you get the chance try Murray's Pub. They had great corned beef cabbage on St. Patrick's Day, a great staff and lots of warm locals to talk it up. Please enjoy the photos!

What To Wear For A Group Photo

Over the years I have taken thousands of family portraits. The number one question people always ask is "What do I wear for my group family portrait?" Really there are no steadfast hard rules for a family portrait. But I have gathered some really helpful tips from my experience.

First don't wear anything distracting or loud. You may love that Hawaiian print shirt from last years vacation to Maui, but your family may think otherwise. Keep it simple.

Also consider what type of portrait you want. Formal or casual is the first question. This will determine the answer to the next question, Indoors or Outdoors? Times have changed and people are looking to get outside for a more natural setting. Something we at Erik R. Soto Photography specialize in. If you will be shooting in a park, maybe the formal suits and cocktail gowns may not be the best option for you.

Generally speaking try to stay within the same color or tonal range in your group portrait. Have everyone choose the same color top and bottom. i.e. blue tops and khaki bottoms or jeans and white shirts. Not everyone has to wear the EXACT same shirt but try and stick to something that doesn't clash. Clothing that blends harmoniously creates unified portraits and a classic style because the viewer's eye will go directly to the faces and not the clothing.

Talk to your family. Communication about your wardrobe is key here. You don't want to show up wearing the exact same dress as your aunt Mary. This will save you an potentially embarrassing moment later.

Lastly, be comfortable. If you are struggling with a top or pair of pants, it will show in your photos. If you feel good, you will look good.

Beach weddings are always a pleasure to photograph. I loved working with this couple as well. The photos turned out beautifully. Torrance Beach is a cool little cove beach at the base of Palos Verdes. It's a great place to photograph, surf, fish and have an intimate wedding.

Suprise opportunities for GORGEOUS Photos

Recently I've had two amazing and rare opportunities with incredible light and luck for photos! We were scheduled for a 30th Anniversary and an Engagement Session but I was also lucky enough to squeak in some fast and awesome landscape shots right afterward each session.

These first three photographs were taken at Pt. Vicente and Pt. Fermin right after Ana & Dave's 30th Anniversary shoot. During that shoot I was lucky enough to make a new friend who gave me access to take photos at Pt. Fermin that the general public does not have available. It was a rare opportunity indeed!! A great many thanks (and a new poster) to the cool guy I met.

These last three shots were photographed at Redondo Beach Pier immediately after Tracy & Matt's engagement shoot. The lighting was incredible that day for their photos but also mine. I had to capture the images in the span of a minute or two immediately after their session. There was no time to fiddle around. Either I knew my stuff or I didn't.... I NAILED IT. I hope you enjoy them all!!

Last week I photographed some the most amazing cars. I am talking BEAUTIFUL show stopping cars. Maserati, Ferrari, Porche and more. I can't help it. I am guy, I like cars. It think it is in our DNA to see a shiny classic car and automatically hem and haw. It has something to do with the power and the gleaming paint and chrome. These cars are like sleek, shiny cats. Alpine Village -- Torrance Commercial & Food Photographer --

I had the great fortune working with Alpine Village to photograph some of their menu items and the entire village grounds. This place is a fun little German town that has a restaurant, shops, cafe, full service bakery (including wedding cakes), and deli. Not to mention one of the best Oktoberfest in the South Bay.

They have a beautiful chapel on site for intimate weddings.

The Emerald Room is set up beautifully for wedding receptions or banquets.

Few places in the South Bay have enough space to house 250+ guests for weddings receptions. Ask about their Klubhouse. It is a classic theater revamped to for banquets and events.

The deserts are amazing here as well as all of the food. You might considering having Alpine Village serve your guests some of their yummy deserts as an option to cake.

Who doesn't love apples?

Now is that a delicious hunk of prime rib or what?

What german restauraunt would be complete without schnitzel? A mighty good version may I add.

Today's headshot sessions was perfect. We started at Veteran's Park and ended on the Redondo Beach Pier. I was a bit worried about the gloomy weather that blanketed the sky when we got there. Thankfully it didn't effect our shoot at all. Jackie was amazing to work with and took direction perfectly. I really enjoyed all the laughs we had during the session. She is such a sweet person.

Lately I've been looking back at how things have developed and where they are headed. I decided to go on a hike yesterday in Palos Verdes in order to return to my roots in photography and do some soul searching. I think I got exactly what I needed. I love the results and felt that passion come alive once again through my landscape photography. We all need to reflect on the past but also make a brighter future. My hike and my photographs reconnected with my past but also illuminated a bright future ahead!!

Erik R. Soto Photography is offering a chance at an opportunity to experience an exciting and personalized FREE senior shoot. We are launching a new Senior Portrait Representative Program in all South Bay High Schools and we need up to Three representatives for each High School.

All representatives will receive the following in exchange for helping Erik R. Soto Photography find classmates for senior portrait sessions:

• One free One Hour on-location portrait session
• One 8×12, two 5×7, and 5 wallet prints of your choice, one pose
• Ten electronic files for sharing via Facebook, Myspace, etc.
• 20% off print orders from the Senior Portrait Representative’s senior session

An adventure in Palm Springs

Finally I am getting around to posting some of the photos from my trip to Palm Springs. It was 114 in the shade. Sometimes vacationing in Palm Springs in the summer is brutal. I had lot of fun despite having to drink 2 cases of water to stay alive.

Given the crazy weather this past summer, Nohea and Duncan were extremely blessed with their beautiful day. Redondo Beach is one of our favorite places to photograph and that defiantly includes weddings. Their lovely reception was at the Seaside Lagoon in Redondo Beach. Their ceremony was Hawaiian inspired and the guys got to wear Hawaiian shirts and flip flops. What more could you ask for? Also the cake was made by the wonderful chefs at Lisa's Bon Appetit. Amy and Steve’s day was amazing. From the beautiful portraits at DelThorne Park to their lavender and blue themed wedding reception at the wonderful Double Tree hotel in Torrance, to their personalized menus displayed at the reception tables. We loved every minute of their wedding, but as always, and especially with this wedding it never really is about the location or the cool centerpieces, or the amazing outfits ( see the guys cool kicks ). For us it’s about the couples we get to work with. These two were so sweet and an absolute joy to work with. So without further ado, on with their wedding photos!

Starved as we were, we went to one of my favorites; Georgio's Pizza. Always great pizza but this time I went with the calzone. A yummy blend of mozzarella, ricotta, pizza sauce, mushrooms, artichokes and feta cheese. A wonderfully thin crispy crust made this calzone shine. Kristine had the chicken strips and a diet coke. How could you go wrong? So here are a quick couple of food photographs from lunch. I recommend this place to everyone. Best part is, THEY DELIVER!!

Big Bear, California

While photographing some real estate in Big Bear, California, I had the opportunity for a little fishing and relaxation. That's me( left) and my buddy Greg. Below is panoramic shot of Big Bear Lake. My assistant captured this image while I got some much needed fishing in.

Big Bear's alpine environment is dominated by pine and oak forests. The area provides a natural habitat for approximately 30 wintering bald eagles and 29 species of rare plants, 10 of which are indigenous to the area. For more information on Big Bear Lake visit http://www.bigbearinfo.com

We chose our black set for a glamorous look, especially with our candles and props. It showcased her skin tone. She was nice enough to let us share these favorites with everyone. It's a great gift for a bride to be to give her fiance as a wedding gift, or even just for the fun of it.

Historic Old Court House, Santa Ana CA

The landmark Old Orange County Courthouse is Southern California's oldest court building, and as such has been witness to many of the events which shaped present day Orange County. From its dedication in 1901, this granite and sandstone building has been the traditional home of county government. Today the 30,000-square foot building has been restored to look much as it had at the turn of the last century. The building contains the Orange County History Center (which includes the Old Courthouse Museum, the Orange County Archives, and the library of the Pacific Coast Archaeological Society) as well as government offices. The building is on the National Register of Historic places and is a State of California Historic Landmark.

I love Dalmatians. I grew up with a few and always love the chance to be around them. This time my brother gave me the chance to photograph his not so long ago. I had a blast playing and rolling around in the grass with them. Pet photography is one of my all time favorite things.

Shauna & Brad's Wedding - Torrey Pines, California

I couldn’t get over how calm and relaxed the two of them were going into their wedding day. Additionally both Shauna and Brad were exceptionally sweet. It really made the day run smooth. I love how the two seemed more concerned with enjoying the moment than stressed about minor details. The ceremony and reception were at Torrey Pines. Brad is the son of famous Nascar racer Art Pollard. Shauna is a wedding/event coordinator in Chicago.
